The Special Investigations Division is comprised of the Major Narcotics Unit, , Threat Response Unit, Technical Services Unit, and Drug Enforcement and Vice Unit. The Division utilizes proactive policing techniques to reduce part one crime, investigate major narcotics complaints and is responsive to community concerns and needs. The Division also works in partnership with federal, state and local agencies in a variety of criminal investigations to include money laundering, organized crime and homeland security.

Major Narcotics Unit 

The Major Narcotics Unit handles major narcotics investigations and target those who traffic in illegal narcotics. They are members of High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) and conduct undercover joint operations in conjunction with several local, state and federal agencies. 

Technical Services Unit

The Technical Services Unit supports the entire agency with covert surveillance needs and special events. They routinely assist in placing camera systems in areas of focus, supporting stationary surveillance vehicles, and conduct video downloads from residential and business camera systems where crimes have occurred.

Threat Response Unit

The Threat Response Unit investigates all threats against local officials and City infrastructure as well as threats of mass violence (such as school threats). This unit works closely with Homeland Security, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and neighboring jurisdictions when investigating threats of domestic based terrorism.

Drug Enforcement/Vice Unit

The Drug Enforcement and Vice Unit conducts mid and upper lever narcotics investigations having a nexus to the city of Fort Lauderdale using covert investigation techniques. Additionally, they assist the Operations Division to combat street level narcotics sales and prostitution. To accomplish this mission they work closely with other local, state and federal agencies.
